Instagram lets you save a Reel to a private collection, but that copy lives inside the app. It disappears if the creator deletes the post, and you can’t watch it offline or move it to another app. To keep a real video file on your phone, you need to download it.
Here’s how to do it in under a minute, without installing anything.
On iPhone (Safari)
- Open the Reel in the Instagram app and tap the share icon (the paper plane), then Copy link.
- Open Safari and go to IGSaver. Tap Paste: the preview loads automatically.
- Tap MP4 HD. Safari asks if you want to download the file. Tap Download.
- Open the Files app → Downloads, tap the video, then tap Share → Save Video to add it to Photos.
Tip: if you download often, long-press the downloads arrow in Safari’s address bar to see your recent files.
On Android (Chrome)
- In Instagram, tap the share icon on the Reel and choose Copy link.
- Open Chrome, go to IGSaver and paste the link.
- Tap MP4 HD. The video is saved to your Downloads folder and shows up in Google Photos or your gallery within a few seconds.
Which quality should I pick?
- MP4 HD: the original quality Instagram serves, usually 720p or 1080p. Best for watching and keeping.
- MP4 SD: a smaller file, handy on slow connections or when storage is tight.
- Audio: just the soundtrack, useful for voice-overs and music snippets.
Common problems
- “This content is private”: the account is private, so only its followers can see the post. The main downloader can’t fetch it. If you follow the account and can see the post, try our private post downloader.
- The download stopped working after a while: download links expire after about an hour. Paste the Reel link again to get a fresh one.
A word on creators
Downloading a Reel to watch offline is fine. Re-uploading someone else’s video as your own isn’t. If you want to repost, ask the creator and credit them.
