How to Download Instagram Photos (2026) — Save Any Post

· 4 min read

Instagram is built for looking at photos, not for keeping them. There’s no download button, and a long press on a picture does nothing. Screenshots work in a pinch, but they’re cropped, lower resolution and come with your phone’s status bar. An Instagram photo downloader saves the original image file instead, in full resolution.

Here’s how to do it for free with IGSaver, on any device.

Why Save Instagram Photos?

There are plenty of good reasons to keep a copy of a photo:

  • Reference and inspiration: outfits, interior design, recipes, tattoo ideas, travel spots.
  • Reposting with credit: if a creator agrees, you need the original file, not a blurry screenshot.
  • Backing up your own posts: keep your photos even if you lose access to your account.
  • Keeping memories: event photos a friend posted, family pictures, a shared trip.

One reminder: photos belong to the people who took them. Saving for personal use is fine; ask before reposting and always give credit.

How to Download an Instagram Photo in 3 Steps

  1. Copy the post link. In Instagram, tap the three dots (⋯) or the share icon on the post, then Copy link. On a computer, copy the address from the browser bar.
  2. Paste it into IGSaver. Go to igsaver.app and paste the link. On a phone, the Paste button does it in one tap.
  3. Tap Download. You’ll see Photo JPG; tap it and the image saves to your device.

Links that start with instagram.com/p/… work, and tracking codes at the end (like ?igsh=…) are removed automatically, so paste the link exactly as you copied it.

Full Resolution, Not a Thumbnail

When you scroll Instagram, the app loads smaller versions of each photo to save data. IGSaver skips those and picks the largest file Instagram stores, usually 1080 pixels wide, in the post’s original shape (square, portrait or landscape). It’s the same JPG Instagram serves, with no extra compression and no watermark.

A carousel holds up to 20 photos and videos in one post. The main IGSaver tool saves the first item of a carousel. To get every photo, use the post source downloader: you open the post in your browser, copy its page source, and the tool lists each photo and video separately so you can save them one by one. It runs entirely in your browser.

Profile Pictures

Instagram shows profile pictures as tiny circles, and you can’t tap to enlarge them. IGSaver can show the full picture:

  1. On the homepage, switch to the Profile Picture tab.
  2. Type the username (or paste the profile link).
  3. Tap Download to save the largest version available.

Private Accounts

The main tool only works with public accounts. If you follow a private account and can see its posts, use the private post downloader. It reads the page your own browser already loaded, so nothing is fetched behind the account’s back, and nothing is sent to our servers.

Works on Every Device

iPhone: open IGSaver in Safari. After tapping Download, the photo appears in Files → Downloads; tap Share → Save Image to add it to Photos.

Android: photos go to your Downloads folder and show up in your gallery right away.

PC and Mac: the JPG is saved to your usual downloads folder.

Frequently asked questions

Does it download photos in full resolution?

Yes. IGSaver fetches the largest version Instagram stores for the photo, usually 1080 pixels wide, not the small preview you see in the feed. Nothing is compressed or re-encoded.

Can I download carousel posts?

The main tool saves the first photo of a carousel. To get every photo of a carousel, use the post source downloader, which lists each item separately.

Can I download profile pictures?

Yes. Switch to the Profile Picture tab on the homepage, type a username, and IGSaver shows the largest version of that account’s profile photo with a download button.

Does it work for private accounts?

The main tool only works with public accounts. If you follow a private account and can see its post, use the private post downloader, which works from your own logged-in browser.
