Instagram Story Downloader — Save Stories Before They Disappear

· 6 min read

Instagram Stories are built to vanish. A friend’s travel moment, a brand’s flash announcement, a creator’s behind-the-scenes clip: after 24 hours, they’re gone. If you want to keep one, you need to save it before the timer runs out.

An Instagram story downloader solves that. With IGSaver, you paste the link to a public story and save the video to your phone or computer in a few seconds. No app, no account, and no login required.

Can You Save Instagram Stories?

Yes, as long as the story comes from a public account and is still live.

Instagram itself only lets you download your own stories. For anyone else’s, there’s no save button: you can watch, react and reply, but not keep a copy. That’s where IGSaver comes in. Because public stories can be viewed by anyone, IGSaver can fetch the same video file Instagram streams and hand it to you as a download.

Private accounts are a different story. When an account is private, only the followers it has approved can see its stories. That content is protected by Instagram, and IGSaver doesn’t try to get around it. If you paste a link to a private story, you’ll see a clear message instead of a download.

As always, saving someone’s story for personal viewing is one thing; reposting it is another. The content belongs to its creator, so ask before sharing it publicly.

How to Download Instagram Stories Step by Step

The process is the same on every device:

  1. Open the story in the Instagram app or on instagram.com.
  2. Copy its link. In the app, tap the three dots (⋯) on the story, or the share icon (paper plane), and choose Copy link. On a computer, just copy the address from your browser’s address bar. It looks like instagram.com/stories/username/1234567890/.
  3. Go to igsaver.app and paste the link into the box. The preview loads automatically.
  4. Tap or click Download. Choose MP4 HD for the best quality, and the story saves to your device.

Each link points to one specific story, so IGSaver downloads exactly the story you copied, even when the account has posted several that day. To save several stories, repeat the steps for each one.

Can’t find “Copy link”? Open the same story on instagram.com in a browser and copy the address bar instead. The result is the same link, and it works just as well on IGSaver.

Timing matters: copy and download the story while it’s still live. Once the 24 hours are up (or if the owner deletes it early), the link stops working.

Save Instagram Stories on iPhone

On iPhone, Safari handles the download, and the Files app is where your story lands first:

  1. In the Instagram app, open the story, tap ⋯ or the share icon, and tap Copy link.
  2. Open Safari and go to igsaver.app.
  3. Tap Paste, wait for the preview, then tap MP4 HD.
  4. When Safari asks, tap Download.
  5. Open the Files app → Downloads and tap the video.
  6. Tap Share → Save Video to move the story into your Photos.

If you prefer to keep stories organised, you can also leave them in Files and create a folder such as “Saved stories”. That keeps them out of your camera roll while staying easy to find.

Save Instagram Stories on Android

On Android, downloaded stories go straight to your Downloads folder:

  1. In Instagram, open the story, tap ⋯ or the share icon, and choose Copy link.
  2. Open Chrome (or any browser) and go to igsaver.app.
  3. Paste the link and tap MP4 HD.
  4. Open your Files app → Downloads to find the video.

On most phones, the story also appears in Google Photos or your gallery app within a few seconds. This works on Samsung, Xiaomi, Huawei, Oppo, Pixel and every other Android device.

Why Stories Disappear After 24 Hours

Stories were designed to be temporary. When Instagram launched them in 2016, the idea was to give people a place to share everyday, in-the-moment content without it living forever on their profile grid. The 24-hour limit makes posting feel low-pressure, and it gives followers a reason to check in every day so they don’t miss anything.

When a story expires, it disappears from public view. The owner can still find it in their private Archive, but other people can’t, and neither can any downloader. That’s why the only reliable way to keep someone else’s public story is to save it while it’s live, or to download it later from a highlight if the owner pinned it there.

Download Story Highlights

Highlights are stories that an account has chosen to keep. They appear as circles under the bio on a profile, and unlike regular stories, they don’t expire: they stay until the owner removes them.

That makes highlights much less time-sensitive. To download one with IGSaver:

  1. Open the profile and tap the highlight circle.
  2. Tap ⋯ or the share icon and choose Copy link. On a computer, copy the address bar; it looks like instagram.com/stories/highlights/1234567890/.
  3. Paste the link on IGSaver and download.

Because highlights are permanent, they’re also the best place to look for older content. Brands and creators often keep tutorials, product launches, FAQs and event recaps in their highlights long after the original stories expired.

IGSaver accepts both the long highlight link and the short instagram.com/s/… link the app creates. A highlight usually contains several stories; IGSaver saves its first video.

Frequently asked questions

Is this Instagram story downloader free?

Yes. IGSaver is completely free, with no account, no subscription and no daily limit. HD quality is included for everyone.

Does the account owner know if I download their story?

No. IGSaver fetches the story file without using your Instagram account, so the download is not linked to your profile. Note that simply viewing a story in the Instagram app does add you to its viewer list.

Can I download stories from private accounts?

No. IGSaver only works with public accounts. Private stories are visible only to approved followers, and we respect that protection.

Can I download a story after the 24 hours are over?

Not if it has expired and was not added to a highlight. Once a story disappears from the account, it can no longer be downloaded. If it was saved to a highlight, use the highlight link instead.

Can I download photo stories too?

IGSaver currently saves video stories. For photo stories, the quickest option is to take a screenshot while the story is open.

Do I need to log in to Instagram to use IGSaver?

No. You never log in and never share your Instagram password. You only paste the link to a public story.

Why does IGSaver say the story is unavailable?

The usual reasons are that the account is private, the story has expired or been deleted, or the link is incomplete. Copy the link again from Instagram and make sure the story is still live.
